I predicted a few days ago that, if Trump was stupid enough to nominate Abrams for Deputy Secretary of State, he would find several Democrats to confirm him. Well, unsurprisingly, I just read this article in Al-Monitor which explains that, as a matter of fact, many of them support his nomination. Fortunately, it seems that Bannon is opposed to Abrams, so hopefully he will prevail and the Democrats won’t be given the opportunity to embarrass themselves again. (The fact he is resisting this nomination, by the way, confirms what I said about Bannon’s influence on foreign policy a while ago.) The author of that article calls the support of Democrats to Abrams surprising. Personally, the only thing I find surprising is that anyone would find this surprising, as the fondness of Democrats for neoconservatives and liberal interventionists is a well-established fact. Democrats apparently like that Abrams is committed to the defense of human rights in the Middle East. Sometimes the stupidity of what people say just defies the imagination… It’s true that Abrams often talk about human rights, but the people in Washington who talk about human rights all the time, such as John McCain or Lindsey Graham, reliably support policies that have led to some of the worst human rights violations in the world. In the past few days, I have also read a lot that, given how inexperienced Tillerson is, Abrams’s experience at the State Department was reassuring. I wonder if the people who say that would think that hiring a known pedophile to take care of their children is reassuring on the ground that he has experience dealing with kids…
