It’s really amazing, although not surprising, that Democrats spend most of their time and energy trying to oppose people whose nomination to the Cabinet would be relatively benign, even from a liberal point of view, but almost completely ignore those who are actually dangerous. Thus, while they made a show of their unsuccessful opposition to DeVos, who as Secretary of Education will have almost no power since the states have most of the power on education, they have made no serious efforts to prevent the nomination of Pompeo, who could actually do serious damage. Indeed, not only have the Democrats not really tried anything to prevent his confirmation, but several of them actually voted in favor of it.
Now, it seems that Trump is seriously considering appointing Elliott Abrams, a prominent neoconservative, as Deputy Secretary of State. Of course, if this happens, you can be that several Democrats will vote to confirm him in Senate, to say nothing of the Republican hawks. Abrams would be a total disaster and a sign that neoconservatives are slowly worming they way into Trump’s administration. (The fact that Tillerson seems to support him, by the way, is pretty worrisome.) Since Abrams opposed Trump during the campaign, there is still a chance that he won’t get the job, but it would probably help if people, especially on the right, made it known that they don’t want him. So, if you want to be really useful, call the White House to say that you don’t want trump to nominate Abrams and be sure to say that you voted for Trump even if you didn’t.
